Gothic Sundial

Blease Hall in Kendall

Josh was Commissioned to design a sundial for the impressive Blease Hall in Kendall, Cumbria. The Elizabethan Manor house was originally the home of a wealthy local wool merchant. The ceiling the ballroom has an incredible hand carved plaster ceiling of swirling vine leaves and grapes made by travelling Italian tradesmen, which the client was keen to see mirrored in the sundial.

The construction of the sundial was inspired by an original Scottish Renaissance design, Josh then designed the 12 individual panels on the sundial to include family crests and symbology. there are even three little ‘dobbies’ or beasts hidden under the top stone to help ward away evil spirits.
